John is a member of Instonians RFC where he played for 18 seasons, including 3 as captain; he served as Director of Rugby in the club from 1998 – 2005.
He was first elected to the Ulster Branch in 2002 and served on on the rugby committee and as chairman of the coaching committee.
A former civil servant John worked in the Department of Finance and Personnel until 2014.
John also served as manager of the Ulster U19s and U20s between 2005 and 2011 and was the Manager of the Ireland U19s in 2007/08. He also managed the Ireland A side at the 2008 Churchill Cup in USA.
A former Honorary Secretary of the Ulster Branch, he was President of the Ulster Branch for the season 2016/17 and appointed to the IRFU committee in July 2016.
