IRFU Tag Booming In Naas

IRFU Tag Booming In Naas

Things are very exciting these days at Naas Rugby Club in Forenaughts during the IRFU Tag rugby season which is only a few weeks away from the competitions finals. Every Thursday evening, over 300 players are enjoying Tag rugby there as its popularity continues to grow.

Tag rugby is proving to be a great way to get out and keep fit over the summer. It is a non-contact rugby style game and no experience or special gear is necessary. The teams are mixed with a try worth 1 point if a man scores or 3 points if the ladies score.

For the screaming supporters there is the Tag café bar, serving beers, burgers, hot dogs, teas and coffees. Just turn up, enjoy the sunshine and have fun watching the games.

The 16 mixed adult teams are split into two levels – ‘intermediate’ or ‘higher’ – and have been playing in two groups since the end of May, with the semi-finals on the Thursday, July 14 and the finals on Friday, July 22.

The two group levels are made up of enthusiastic teams of guys and girls with great team names like ‘The Wheelbarrows, ‘Guten Tag’, ‘Sugar Taggies’ and ‘Faketantastic’. Some well-known local faces playing are our Kildare Rose; Claire Walsh, and Munster and Ireland Wolfhounds back Johne Murphy.

After six rounds of Tag rugby with 1one more round to play before we progress to the semi-finals and finals stages, the current ‘Intermediate’ division table leaders are ‘The B Sharps with John Hennessy’ on 12 points and ‘No Woman No Try’ in second place with 9 points.

In the Higher division, the ‘Tomahawks’ are leading on 10 points. They are closely being chased by ‘The Old Spice VII’ in second place on 9 points.

The Tag Rugby Venue Manager is Liam Daly of Naas RFC. Tag rugby is part of a number of summertime activities at the club which also includes the Naas RFC Summer Rugby Camps.

There are a limited number of spaces left on the camps, which are aimed at boys and girls, from Under-7s up to Under-17s. All commence on Monday, August 15 and run to Friday, August 20.

Contact Kevin Greene of Naas RFC on 0862692400 for further information and application forms on these rugby camps, or you can log onto www.naasrugby.com.

The regular rugby season for Naas begins again this coming September and the club’s membership numbers have grown significantly in recent years, helped by the great success of provincial and Ireland stars such as Jamie Heaslip, Fionn Carr and Geordan Murphy of Leicester – all of whom played all their underage rugby in Naas RFC.

These men are all great ambassadors for the club and can often be seen out in the club supporting the youth and underage teams on a Saturday morning.

With the Rugby World Cup on this autumn, the numbers of new players are expected to be high, when training begins in September.

Boys and girls from Under-7 upwards are very welcome to come along. Contact David McKeown (Youths Chair) on 0863894286 for more information.
