IRFU Level 2 Assistant Coaching Course

The first course for Assistant coaches (Stage 4 LTPD) was held in Malahide RFC on 19th & 20th May.

The course is aimed atpreparing coaches who operate in an assistant (Forwards or Backs) coaches role at 18’s to 20’s and J1 to Senior XV levels (Stage 4 LTPD).

All Coaches underwent workshops on Learning Styles, Game Appreciation, Key Factor Analysis and Mental Imagery. In addition, the rugby specific modules were split into Forward and Backline related workshops.


The Forwards coaches dealt with Scrum (Bryan Hyland), Lineout (Jeremy Davidson), Restarts (Colin McEntee) and specialist workshops on developing the Front row (Bryan Hyland) and  Lineout throwing (Peter Smyth).


The Backs coaches dealt with Backline attack (Brian Walsh), Backline defence (Steve McIvor), Counter attack (Niall Malone) and specialist workshops on Kicking skills (Richie Murphy) and Scrumhalf passing (Steve Aboud).


Twenty three coaches attended the course and will now be required in order to complete their accreditation
 log 60 hours (as assistant) at the appropriate level
 complete one successful practical observation
 produce a written profile of their unit’s strengths & weakenesses
 sign & return the code of ethics 


This course will be available for assistant coaches at Level 1 (Stage 3 LTPD) in each Province this summer, please contact your Branch Development Office for details.
