Stephen Mutch Appointed As Lead Physio For Ireland Team
Stephen Mutch has joined the IRFU as lead physiotherapist for the men’s national team having previously worked with French club Montpellier as head of performance.
Prior to his time with Montpellier, Mutch worked with the Scotland men’s national team for over a decade, including three Rugby World Cups (2007, 2011 and 2015).
His remit with the IRFU will see him working directly with the Ireland men’s squad as lead physio, and he will be proactively working with national squad players through the provinces on rehabilitation and regeneration programmes.
He will also play an active role in the development of the IRFU’s player wellness programme and contribute to the professional development of all physios working in professional rugby in Ireland.
Stephen has worked with Team Scotland at five Commonwealth Games, including the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia when he was head physio.
He was also head of medical services for GB Students for the 2019 World University Games in Naples and the head physiotherapist for the Summer World University Games in 2015 (Gwangju – South Korea) and 2017 (Taipei – Taiwan) and the World University Championships in 2016 in the UK.
Educated at Queen’s College, Glasgow, where he received his BSc in Physiotherapy, he went on to earn an MSc in Sports Physiotherapy from University College, London.
Stephen is the chair of Physios in Sport with the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sport and Exercise Medicine.
