Energia Women’s All-Ireland League: Round 2 Review

Energia Women’s All-Ireland League: Round 2 Review

Suttonians are off the mark after just two games in the Energia All-Ireland League thanks to a 17-12 win away to Galwegians. The bus trip west of the Shannon was a novel experience in itself for the league debutants – In February 2018, they were still playing in Division 2 of the Leinster League.

“They sat down in a dressing room at the end of that season, looked each other in the eyes and made the decision to stick together,” says Head Coach Robert Forbes

“We’re really proud of our first AIL win. Our targets are realistic. We’re not expecting to win the All-Ireland League but we’re expecting to be competitive in every game we play.”

The game itself was a stop-star affair with a high penalty count. Galwegians used a strong pack to drive at the visitors and Dearbhla Canty opened the scoring.

Suttonians played with width to gain parity. “We like to think we can challenge any team with our back line. There was a lot of nervous energy but we felt we had the edge,” said Forbes.

Galwegians retook the lead through Ursula Sammon but Sutts equalised again as Grainne Tummon showed some decent footwork to finish in the corner.

It took the very last play of the game to produce the winning score. Molly Fitzgerald was a try scorer for Leinster’s U18s last year and the former Navan winger popped up again here to touch down out wide.

“Old Belvedere are coming over next week and the girls are dying to get stuck into them. They are loving being in the All-Ireland League,” said Forbes.

Malone also have their first point on the board after coming back to secure a losing bonus point in a 12-7 defeat to Cooke. Cooke’s scrum was a potent weapon through out for the home side with tries coming from Lesley Megarrity and Ilse Van Staden. Malone rallied well in the second half and got their reward when Sarah Murphy crashed over from a quick tap penalty.

Here are the try highlights from the game.

UL Bohemian and Railway Union lead the table on maximum points after two games. Railway came from behind to beat Old Belvedere 22-17 on Thursday night while UL Bohs also had it tough in their first half against Blackrock College. Four tries after the restart ensured a 38-15 win.
