Video Replays: Ireland Men’s RWC Sevens Matches In San Francisco

The first Ireland Men’s Sevens team to play in a Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament in nine years certainly made a splash in San Francisco. Stan McDowell’s charges saw off World Series sides Kenya, Wales and Australia to win the Challenge Trophy and finish ninth overall.

Reflecting on a tournament which saw the 16th seeds win four of their five matches at baseball’s iconic AT&T Park, Ireland captain Billy Dardis said: “We all dreamed of a World Cup being big but it’s exceeded our expectations hugely. Just the crowd, the stadium, the way it’s been broadened it’s just been fantastic.

“A lot of people put a lot of effort into it, the support staff around the stadium have been amazing. It’s ran really smoothly and it’s just been a great tournament. We’ve really enjoyed it, and obviously success helps.

“We came over here to do a job, we wanted to win it. Not making the last-eight was disappointing but I think four wins out of five is huge, especially beating three core teams on the World Series. That’s the standard that we aspire to play at.”

You can watch all five of the Ireland Men’s games below, from their dramatic late win over Chile in the first round to the heavy defeat to reigning World Series champions South Africa, and their three-match winning streak across Saturday and Sunday when they scored 13 tries.
