Ireland’s high performance boxers, including Olympic medallists Kenny Egan, Michael Conlan and Paddy Barnes, traded training trips with Declan Kidney’s squad as both parties enjoyed a Halloween ‘fight night’ rather than a fright night.

The IABA high performance unit, led by head coach Billy Walsh, enjoyed a trip to the rugby squad’s training base in Carton House where they are preparing for the upcoming GUINNESS Series games.

Commenting on the night, IRFU Communications & Media Manager Karl Richardson said: “Our team manager Mick Kearney knows Billy Walsh and contacted him about the possibility of bringing some of his high performance boxers to meet with the squad. Billy was very keen on the idea and yesterday the lads all met up.

“They had a (training) session and then some sparring with our guys out in Carton House. After that they had dinner together and then there was a questions and answers session with the boxers talking about how they prepared for the Olympic Games.

“It is nice that Irish athletes who perform and achieve at the highest level can come together to compare and contrast their work and training.”

Some of the Ireland squad members tweeted afterwards about the get-together with the boxers, with Simon Zebo also releasing some footage of Sean ‘Nugget’ Cronin sparring with Olympic bronze medallist Michael Conlan!
