Sligo’s Season Kicks Off in Style

Volkswagen Tag rugby event has kicked off in style with all 36 teams arriving in time for their games at Hamilton park, Strandhill Sligo.

Although the rain didn’t help the teams, the cold certainly made them run that bit faster!

Round one began at 6.30 with The Strandvestites against Good4U, this was expected to be a close game which was the case as the scores were even all through the game, the Good4U team led by Karol Butler took the edge and won the game 11-9. Gavin Foley and Leona Moran led the Pimp My Side tag team against The Rugger Bandits at 6.30, the scores were even at half time, which may have been upexpected with an impressive panel supplied by “Pimp my side”, however The Rugger Bandits came back with an impressive second half, however the game was taken by Pimp my Side with the final score 23-16.

The Legless Lizards, went up against The Untouchables at 7.15 with Gary Devins taking his first referee role for the season. The game was intense with both Gary Holohan and Enda Watters working together to help defend against the Legless lizards. The Untouchables with new 2012 jersey’s kept the pace against the Legless lizards, but the lizards took the lead and the game with the final score of 21-7. The 8pm round had no rain for the 40minute games, with 5 games happening, it had 10 teams on the pitch.

The Indecisive Tagstards who achieved the Spirit of tag in 2011 were back in fighting force to compete against Tricky Try Hards, this was a game of two halfs with two equally competive teams, the game was a low scoring one with the Indecisive Tagstards taking the win by 6 point to 4.

The 8.45 games not only had to compete against each other but also with the rain and the lack of light approaching the clubhouse. The Socialites took on the Scrumbags in the battle to win. The Socialites who had a strong panel had the lead in the game, although the Scrumbags led by Mark Flanagan showed the fight was not over they
managed to get some good male trys on the scoreboard. However the Socialites took the game with a few female tries by Emer Dolan on her debut it helped the Socialites tag team win the game 27 -7.

The Apres Tag in the clubhouse was full of very cold and some wet taggers for the evening but with the fire blazing it was a warm night of singing and drinking with Scruffy Duffy on Karaoke.
