All About Playing IRFU Tag

We have been receiving a lot of correspondence from budding IRFU Tag players all over Ireland. To assist you in getting ready for the new season which is just around the corner, here are some frequently asked questions.

Q: I’ve never played any rugby before. Can I still play?

A: Of course you can! There is ‘no contact’ in IRFU Tag. It is easy to pick up as well as great fun. Leagues at our venues are graded according to ability. An ‘A’ grade league would be the highest ability through to ‘C’ grade which is actually the most popular along with ‘Beginners/D grade’.

Q: When does registration take place and where?

A: Registration is available online on www.irfutag.ie. Competition for places is busy, so make sure you guarantee your team’s place by registering as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Leagues at many venues have already been full up since the end of January.

Q: What do I need in order to play?

A: To start with, the only truly compulsory accessory required is a pair of approved Tag rugby shorts. These must be shorts (made by any manufacturer) that bear ‘no’ pockets and sport a velcro patch on each hip for a Tag to be attached upon. These shorts are available to all at each IRFU Tag venue ‘on the night’.

Q: How many on a Tag team?

A: The recommended squad size for a IRFU Tag team is 12 players. During a game, each team must have no more than seven players on the field of play at any one time. Of the seven players onfield, three must be female.

Q: Where can I view the rules?

A: A downloadable version of the ‘Laws of the Game’ is available here. Should there be any changes to these laws, notice will be sent to all mailing list members and the webpage will be updated.

Q: Am I automatically insured playing?

A: The IRFU recommends that each player undertake their own Personal Accident Insurance cover against any injury sustained from playing the game itself during the Tag rugby season.

Q: How do I keep up to date with Tag news?

A: The IRFU Tag website is part of one of the most frequently visited sports websites in Europe, www.IrishRugby.ie. Make sure you bookmark us and visit frequently to stay in touch with what is happening during the season.

Each IRFU Tag host venue has its own mini-website or Venue page, which lists information such as news, fixtures and results, competition tables and other news relevant to your venue. These are accessible in the ‘Where to Play’ section of the website.
