Cahill Joins Keogh In Shannon Coaching Team

Shannon RFC have confirmed that another former All-Ireland League winner with the club will join the senior coaching team for next season.

Eoin Cahill will link up once again with newly-appointed head coach Stephen Keogh as Shannon’s assistant coach with responsibility for the backs.

Cahill returns to Shannon, a club he played with for four seasons, after a very successful coaching stint with his native Bruff.

As player-coach, he helped guide Bruff from Division 3 of the All-Ireland League to their current Division 1B status as well as winning the Munster Senior Cup and Bateman All-Ireland Cup this season.

A hugely experienced centre who has won three All-Ireland League Division 1 titles with Shannon, Cahill has moved effortlessly between playing and coaching, and his previous association with Shannon meant he was an obvious candidate for the position.

Speaking about his new role, Cahill expressed his delight at returning to Shannon. “I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in with the Shannon lads again and of course working with Stephen,” he said.

“I’ve had a great run with Bruff and although there’s plenty of talent there, I felt that it was time for me to move on and let the lads here a new voice.

“I know what Shannon expects, and having played with the club before, I’m sure I can help guide them back to the top of the league.”

Cahill will be working with a man that he is very familiar with, having played with Keogh in both Bruff and Shannon colours over the years.

Keogh was very enthusiastic about the appointment, stating: “Eoin has proved his worth as a coach with Bruff over the last few years and I’m really looking forward to working with him in the coming season.

“Like myself, he is very familiar with the Shannon ethos and we both know that we can achieve with this talented group of players.”

Shannon RFC Chairman Jack Keane was equally excited about the addition to the club’s coaching staff and explained the reasoning behind Cahill’s appointment.

“When Eoin left us a few years ago to rejoin Bruff, he did so with the gratitude of everyone in the club,” he explained.

“His contribution to Shannon winning three league titles during his career with us ensured that there was a link between both parties that would never be broken, and Eoin’s return as a coach ensures the wheel has come full circle.

“His abilities as a player have transferred seamlessly to his ability as a coach and we are sure that his experience will be invaluable to us in the coming years.

“Although we made this appointment a few weeks ago, our hope was to keep it under wraps so to speak , so that Eoin and Bruff could concentrate on their promotion/relegation play-off (against Bective Rangers) last Saturday.

“Thankfully they achieved their goal, and we can look forward to Eoin coming to us on the back of yet another success.”
