Unchallenged, flanker Derek Hall won a lineout ball and galloped over for a 19th-minute try that split the sides at half-time 8-3.

‘Gannon had edged ahead in the eighth minute when right winger John McGuckin thumped over a penalty kick from 30 metres out.

UCD’s Leinster-capped centre Fergus McFadden reduced the arrears with a well-struck penalty just past the half hour as the Students started to make use of their possession.

McFadden increased the pressure on the hosts when he landed his second penalty early in the second half.

But the Tyrone men wrestled back control of the game on 62 minutes. Out-half James Shiells sent a delightful kick through for centre Neil Patterson to gather and touch down.

McGuckin supplied the conversion for a 15-6 scoreline. Credit to UCD, they had a few bites at the cherry in the dying minutes and deservedly got over for a bonus point-clinching try.

They launched a pacy counter-attack, five minutes from the finish, and full-back Conor Quinn timed his run to perfection to get over out wide.

McFadden did very well to convert but with flanker Andy Gardner the pick of the home players, Dungannon held firm for a precious league win.
