DIVISION ONE:

BALLYMENA 5 GALWEGIANS 19, Eaton Park

Galwegians scored their second successive AIB League win over Ulster opposition as they outscored Ballymena by three tries to one at Eaton Park.

‘Wegians established a 7-0 lead thanks to an intercept try from in-form winger John Cleary.

Full-back Robert O’Beirne tapped over the conversion and Ballymena had their only bright spell coming up to half-time.

‘Wegians defended resolutely and worked Cleary and centre Chris Briegl, a former Ballymena player, over for further tries.

The hosts’ only score arrived in injury-time from full-back Jamie Smith.

BLACKROCK COLLEGE 28 TERENURE COLLEGE 3, Stradbrook

Terenure College: Pen: David McAllister

Five-try Blackrock College tore Terenure College apart as they impressively moved to the top of the Division One table.

Team captain Shane Byrne and wingers Shane Monahan and David Rowan (3) all crossed the whitewash in a one-sided derby at Stradbrook.

Hooker Byrne started the scoring with a pushover try. Flanker Jayden Hill was sin-binned but ‘Rock still led by 18-3 at the break.

David McAllister had kicked a penalty before half-time for Terenure, whose back-line was exposed badly by Rowan’s brace of second half tries.

BUCCANEERS 8 UL BOHEMIANS 9, Dubarry Park

UL Bohemians: Pens: Fergal Lawler, Aidan McNulty 2

Aidan McNulty kicked two penalties to edge UL Bohemians past Buccaneers in a poor encounter at Dubarry Park.

The 20-year-old McNulty was sprung from the replacements bench and the switch proved an inspired one by coach Ian Costello as the youngster kicked the decisive points for Bohs.

Buccs hit the front in the 28th minute when they tapped a free-kick. Alan Gaughan jinked forward before putting his centre partner Alex Hayman over for an unconverted try.

Gaughan kicked the hosts into an 8-0 lead with a well-struck penalty, however, a successful Fergal Lawler penalty and two more kicks from McNulty, after Buccs flanker Kolo Kiripati was sin-binned, saw UL take the verdict.

CLONTARF 30 ST. MARY’S COLLEGE 19, Castle Avenue

St. Mary’s College: Tries: Philip Brophy, Conor Donohue, Darragh Fanning; Cons: Shaun McCarthy 2

Michael Keating, a name for the future, notched two tries in Clontarf’s bonus point 30-19 win over St. Mary’s College at Castle Avenue.

Mary’s were comprehensively knocked off top spot as teenage winger Keating took his tally to four tries in two games.

Mary’s made a flying start with winger Philip Brophy touching down in the fifth minute.

But Clontarf, helped by their dominant pack, ground out their third straight success with Leinster flanker Sean O’Brien (2) adding to Keating’s brace.

CORK CONSTITUTION 16 YOUNG MUNSTER 21, Temple Hill

Young Munster: Tries: Matt Costello, Glen Carroll; Con: Matt Costello; Pens: Matt Costello 3

Young Munster shocked Cork Constitution into submission at Temple Hill as the defending champions suffered their first AIB League defeat since last January.

Constitution’s 11-match winning run came to an end as Young Munster full-back Matt Costello and centre Glen Carroll claimed second half tries.

Touchdowns from Billy Holland and Richie Lane had a strangely subdued Con 10-9 ahead at half-time. Costello kicked three penalties at the other end.

But, in a nip-and-tuck second period, an intercept try from star man Costello and a fine effort from Carroll gave the Cookies a famous victory.

DUNGANNON 15 UCD 13, Stevenson Park

UCD: Try: Conor Quinn; Con: Fergus McFadden; Pens: Fergus McFadden 2

Derek Hall scored his third try in as many league games as Dungannon overcame UCD by 15-13 at Stevenson Park.

Unchallenged, flanker Hall won a lineout ball and galloped clean through for a 19th-minute try which split the sides at half-time – 8-3.

John McGuckin and Fergus McFadden had swapped penalties either side of that try, and the latter then reduced the arrears to two points.

But before a late seven-pointer from College’s Conor Quinn, James Shiells teed up Neil Patterson for the match-winning 62nd-minute try.

OLD BELVEDERE 16 DOLPHIN 11, Anglesea Road

Dolphin: Try: James Coughlan; Pens: Barry Keeshan 2

Continuing their development under new coach Phil Werahiko, Old Belvedere climbed up to second place in the standings with a determined 16-11 win over Dolphin at Anglesea Road.

Belvo made it three wins on the bounce as winger Eddie Devitt and scrum half Ruairi Cushion broke through for second half tries.

Two penalties from new out-half Kieran Hurrell had the Dubliners 6-5 ahead at half-time, with Munster’s James Coughlan touching down for Dolphin.

Barry Keeshan kicked the visitors into a 46th-minute lead and he gave his side some consolation by landing an injury-time penalty for a losing bonus point.
