Irish Rugby TV: IRFU Rolls Out Teacher Training Modules
The IRFU, in conjunction with the Department of Education, has rolled out a series of teacher training courses designed to help teachers to adapt PE lessons to pupil's interest or to include children with special educational needs.
The IRFU, in conjunction with the Department of Education, has rolled out a series of teacher training courses designed to help teachers to adapt PE lessons to pupil’s interest or to include children with special educational needs.
Designed initially by Derek Maybury, Coach Development Manager with Leinster Rugby, along with Rugby Development officers in the province to help integrate fundamental movement skills into PE sessions, the course has now been taken on by the IRFU and rolled out across a number of the venues across Ireland.
The course, run in conjunction with the Department of Education, is seen a natural way of increasing the sustainability of the highly successful Aldi Play Rugby programme where schools receive interactions from the provincial staff along with access to online coaching resources.

All teachers that take part in the summer courses also receive an Aldi Play Rugby pack for their school. Largely practical based, the course examines Fundamental Movement Skills, Fundamental Games Skills and Game Specific Skills.
There is be an emphasis on pedagogical skills, teaching methodologies and class management skills, building on existing knowledge in PE to allow teachers to adapt lessons to pupil’s interest or to include children with special educational needs. It also highlights ways to integrate numeracy, literacy and SPHE programmes in a co-curricular way.
