Communications Board
Every rugby club across the four provinces will receive a Rugby Communications Board – a large-format visual aid designed to help players with additional communication needs achieve their potential in rugby.

What is the Rugby Communications Board?
The Rugby Communications Board is a specialised communication system, designed by Speech and Language Therapists and based on principles of child language development. It helps coaches simplify their language and provides players with a visual tool to support understanding and expression.
This board is designed to be used on the pitch, in training, and around the club environment, making rugby more accessible and inclusive for everyone.
How Does It Help?
- Supports players with communication needs to participate fully and achieve their potential
- Helps coaches get their message across more clearly and consistently
- Breaks down communication barriers between coaches, players, and teammates
- Enables players to express themselves quickly and confidently using visual prompts
- Strengthens inclusion by ensuring everyone can be part of the game and the club environment
Why It Matters
The Rugby Communications Board is more than a resource – it’s a statement of inclusion. By using it, clubs create an environment where every player has a voice, every coach can be understood, and barriers to participation are reduced.
Resources Available
To help clubs make the most of their board, the IRFU has created a full support package including an educational video, fact sheet and downloadable copy of the board to print.
