World-Class Line-Up In Place For IRFU Conditioning Coach Course

A host of world-class experts in the field of strength and conditioning have been confirmed as speakers for the 2018 IRFU Conditioning Coach Course, which takes place at Institute of Technology Carlow from Monday, July 23 to Friday, July 27.

Nick Winkelman, the IRFU’s Head of Athletic Performance and Science, will deliver a keynote module on ‘Coaching Cues’. A graduate of Oregan State University, Winkelman is an internationally-recognised speaker and has previously worked with athletes in the NFL, Major League Baseball and the NBA.

Martin Kennedy is the National Talent strength & conditioning coach for the IRFU and the lead strength & conditioning coach for the Ireland Under-20s. He will deliver a number of modules on the course, including ‘Movement’. He was previously Head of Athletic Performance with Dublin GAA and has worked with athletes from a variety of sports, including netball, athletics, golf, Australian Rules and basketball.

Ian Jeffreys is a highly-regarded coach, author, academic and presenter, and is a Professor of strength & conditioning at the University of South Wales. He has authored six books in the area of sports performance, including ‘Total Soccer Fitness’, ‘Gamespeed’, ‘Developing Speed’, and ‘A Coaches Guide to Enhancing Recovery -The Performance Lifestyle’. Ian will deliver the ‘Gamespeed for Rugby’ module.

‘Strength Training for Rugby’ and a number of other modules will be given by Eamonn Flanagan, lead strength & conditioning consultant with the Sport Institute Ireland. He has worked in S&C for the IRFU, the Scottish Rugby National Academy and Edinburgh Rugby.

Cathal Byrd is a highly experienced competitive weightlifter and active strength & conditioning coach. Cathal has a degree in Physical Education and English from the University of Limerick and is a certified weightlifting coach and qualified secondary school teacher. He has worked extensively as a strength & condition coach in the Ulster Bank League and Munster Schools Cup competitions. He will be assistant tutor on the ‘Strength Training’ section of the course.

The week-long course at IT Carlow will also include presentations from Charlie Higgins of Leinster Rugby and Fergal O’Callaghan of Munster Rugby.

IRFU Conditioning Coach Course director Kevin Cradock has a wealth of experience in the area of S&C, as well as an educator in the game of rugby. He has worked with Connacht and Leinster, as well the various Ireland underage representative sides. Kevin will deliver several modules, including ‘Recovery.’
