Listowel Touch Blitz Introduces Kerry Girls To Rugby

The Listowel RFC girls section recently organised a Touch Rugby Shield Blitz competition at Town Park, Listowel which saw over 70 girls taking part.

The schools that participated were Ballybunion St. Joseph’s, Listowel Presentation and Tarbert Comprehensive.

All teams from both of the Junior and Senior sections were very well matched and ultimately it came down to a fine margin in order to declare the winners. Tarbert Comprehensive claimed the Junior Shield on the day with the Senior Shield going to Listowel Presentation.

The majority of girls were playing rugby for the first time with great excitement on the day.

The positive response that has been received by Listowel RFC from the teachers has been very important to the success of this tournament and indeed the development of girls rugby.

The underlining reasons for the creation of this tournament was for Listowel RFC to give girls the opportunity to try rugby and if they liked it, they would be encouraged to join their local club.

This initiative has already reaped the rewards by accepting several members directly from the running of this tournament.

Listowel RFC provides qualified IRFU coaches who teach rugby in a safe environment.

The club has a child protection policy – not only do their players enjoy fun-filled training sessions, but experience personal development in terms of rugby skills and also life skills such as leadership, teamwork, commitment, communication. They encourage good initiative, decision making, to name but a few.
