Referees Announced For RBS 6 Nations

Ireland’s John Lacey will referee his first ever RBS 6 Nations match in February, while Alain Rolland is also included in the Elite Panel in what is his last season.

John Lacey will take charge of the opening game of the 2014 RBS 6 Nations Championship when Wales host Italy in the Millennium Stadium.

Fellow Irishman Alain Rolland will retire from refereeing at the end of this season. His final RBS 6 Nations refereeing appointment will be the clash between Wales and France.

Craig Joubert from South Africa will be in charge of Ireland’s opening fixture of the Championship, against Scotland on Sunday, February 2. Joubert will also be the man in the middle for Ireland’s clash with England at Twickenham on Saturday, February 22.

Wayne Barnes will referee Ireland’s meeting with defending champions Wales at the Aviva Stadium, while Nigel Owens will have the whistle for Ireland’s encounter with Italy.

Ireland’s final game of the 2014 Championship against France in Paris will be refereed by Steve Walsh, who officiated in Ireland’s recent GUINNESS Series win over Samoa.

The International Rugby Board announced the match official appointments for the 2014 RBS 6 Nations earlier today.

Appointments were made by the IRB Match Official Selection Committee at its meeting in Dublin and follow a detailed review of recent performances during a busy November international window.

The RBS Six Nations, which kicks off on February 1 and concludes on March 15, will see 11 referees take charge of 15 matches.

Commenting on the appointments, IRFU Director of Referees Owen Doyle said: “We are delighted to see John Lacey in charge of his first ever RBS 6 Nations game. It is testament to his hard work coming up through ranks.

“It is also a poignant tournament as it marks the last one for Alain Rolland who has been an examplar to young referees.”
