Dolphin And Cork Con To Light Up Live On IrishRugby.ie

This Friday night one of the oldest rivalries in Cork sport takes centre stage with Dolphin hosting Cork Constitution in Division 1A of the Ulster Bank League and you can watch it live on IrishRugby.ie.

Cork Constitution are one of two unbeaten sides in the league to date, while Dolphin enter the game on the back of a defeat by Division 1A front runners UCD in Dublin last weekend.

Many of Munster’s rising stars will be on show on Friday night with former Cork hurler and Ireland Under-20 international Darren Sweetnam lining out on the wing for Dolphin and last season’s Division 1A Young Player of the Year Johnny Holland directing play from out-half for Constitution.

The game is also a real family affair with four sets of brothers in the two squads. The Cronin and Scannell brothers are on the Dolphin side while the Duffy and Ryan clans are represented on the Constitution side.

Indeed, a family name will be seen as the main sponsor to both sides for the first time in both club’s history.

Leading Cork car dealership, Keary’s Motor Group, are the proud sponsor of both sides. The Keary families have a strong association with both clubs, while Keary’s group director Brendan Keary has the distinction of  playing All-Ireland League rugby for both sides in the 1990s.

Cork Con enter the game without talismanic captain and scrum half Gerry Hurley, but promising youngster Ryan Foley has really impressed in Hurley’s absence.

Dolphin also have to plan without former captain and Ireland Club international Eric Moloney who, like Hurley, is recovering from a hand injury, while USA international John Quill returns to the Dolphin squad after a lengthy lay-off.

Local sporting derbies always whet the appetite of any sporting enthusiast and Dolphin skipper Christy Condon expects the game to be a thriller.

“Last season’s game on Good Friday was an absolute cracker and this Friday will be no different,” said experienced prop Condon.

“The club is expecting a huge crowd and we, as players, are relishing the opportunity. I would urge any sports fan in Cork to come out and see a top quality game.

“The stars of tomorrow are on show. Just two years ago Simon Zebo, Peter O’Mahony, James Coughlan and Tomas O’Leary played in this fixture. So if you want a good night’s entertainment, join us in Musgrave Park.”

The game kicks off at 7.30pm with gates open from 6pm.

The Cork derby tie will be live on IrishRugby.ie with commentary from the IRFU’s Gordon Black and former Dolphin second row and rugby pundit Hugh Farrelly on the microphone.
