Listowel Girls ‘Give It A Try’

Listowel Girls ‘Give It A Try’

Blue skies, sun shining and sounds of laughter were the order of the day in Listowel Town Park where over forty girls participated in the IRFU’s ‘Give It A Try’ programme.

The girls had fun taking part in games which introduced them to the main skills, challenges and team work that is involved in rugby.

The ‘Give It A Try’ open day in Listowel RFC created opportunities for girls from across the age range to get involved, with girls attending from 7 to 17 years of age.

The huge numbers on the day, coupled with the well-prepared coaches, allowed two groups to form on the basis of age, thereby ensuring that the session was a fun, positive and successful experience for all involved.

Also present on the day was Ireland Women’s international Marie Louise Reilly who was part of the victorious 2013 Grand Slam team.

During the session ‘Maz’ helped the girls learn new skills, gave advice and encouraged them to have fun and confidence in their abilities.

After the session all the girls, coaches and other club members were invited to have their picture taken with the Women’s Six Nations trophy, receive a signed poster, share their rugby experiences with Maz and also enjoy the barbecue and refreshments provided by the club.

The ‘Give It A Try’ event was a huge success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all involved. It was a positive catalyst for the Listowel club’s future development of their girls section and was an opportunity for the club to showcase itself within the community.

As a result of the success of this programme, further sessions were arranged on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the summer in order to provide opportunities for girls to take part in positive, challenging and fun activities. The appetite for girls rugby is borne out by the numbers attending training.

Listowel’s director of girls rugby Kieran Reilly said: “Listowel RFC are a well established and ambitious club who encourage a supportive and positive environment for all their members and offer a fantastic resource within the community.

“They are fully supportive of the development of a girls section within the club and see it as a fantastic opportunity to grow the club.”
