Ulster Bank League: Division 2A Previews

ULSTER BANK LEAGUE: DIVISION 2A: Friday, March 1st

– kick off 2.30pm unless stated

Seapoint (9^th) v Greystones (15^th), Kilbogget Park, Friday Night Lights, 8pm

This is a crucial game for Greystones. There are only four rounds of games left and they are second from bottom.

Their draw with Old Crescent last weekend left them just four points ahead of DLSP and one behind Midleton.

Seapoint’s wins over Highfield and Galwegians have seen them climb to mid table safety but they are in form and could well condemn Greystones to a fraught few weeks.

ULSTER BANK LEAGUE: DIVISION 2A: Saturday, March 2nd

Cashel (7^th) v Highfield (8^th), Spafield

A surprisingly heavy loss to Queens last weekend left Cashel stuck in 7^th having beaten DLSP and UCC in the preceding rounds. Fluctuating form that they will not be happy with.

Highfield’s win over City of Derry last weekend brought to an end a run of defeats dating back to the start of December.

On home soil Cashel are favourites and if they can sort out their form issues they should take the points on Saturday afternoon.

City of Derry (6^th) v Bective Rangers (13^th), Judge’s Road

Any thoughts of a late charge from City of Derry may have been scuppered by the loss to Highfield last weekend. That said you never know who might slip up so they can still focus with intent.

Bective’s two point loss to Corinthians was a good result given the Galway side are 2^nd but it still saw Rangers slip to 13^th – just three points clear of a possible relegation playoff.

If the visitors can bring that level of intensity again they could pull off a great away win but odds still favour the home side.

Midleton (14^th) v Terenure (1^st), Towns Park

For a neutral this could be an interesting tie. A relegation threatened Midleton host title chasing Terenure.

‘Nure are odds on favourites but these ‘backs to the wall’ games can produce the odd shock.

That said the Dublin side have been prolific against the lower ranked sides and should take the points.

Old Crescent (12^th) v Corinthians (2^nd), Rosbrien

Crescent’s draw with Greystones saw them slip to the 12^th but still clear of any relegation worries.

Saturday is a big challenge with the title and promotion chasing Corinthians making the trip from Galway.

Corinthians narrow win over Bective is difficult to read. Was it a wobble? Can they recover the form that saw them beat Terenure the round before? A strong win keeps them right in the chase with Terenure.

Old Wesley (10^th) v DLSP (16^th), Donnybrook

Wesley haven’t won since they beat Cashel back in December but they have been up against some tough opposition in the likes of Terenure last weekend.

DLSP may have lost eight of their eleven games but they haven’t been the whipping boys as their losing bonus point against UCC shows.

They are still staring relegation in the face but if they can pick up a result on Saturday they could keep pressure on Greystones and Midleton.

Queens (11^th) v Galwegians (5^th), Dub Lane

Queens have beaten Cashel and Old Wesley in recent weeks but they face a tough challenge at home to Galwegians on Saturday.

A loss to Seapoint and a draw with UCC  may have ended ‘Wegians promotion ambitions but like Banbridge they won’t give up the ghost just yet.

An intriguing game in prospect therefore with a possible away win on the cards.

UCC (3^rd) v Banbridge (4^th), The Mardyke

Candidate for match of the day in Division 2A as 3^rd plays 4^th. UCC need to win to keep in the hunt with Corinthians and Terenure – especially given they have a game more played.

Banbridge can still catch the top three and a win on Saturday would keep that ambition alive for another weekend.

A cracking game in prospect at The Mardyke and a tough one to call.
