In perfect playing conditions and in front of a large crowd, this season’s Irish Universities’ Under-21 Conroy Cup Competition was eagerly competed for at the UCC RFC playing grounds on the Curraheen Road.
Hosts UCC were joined last Saturday by teams from holders UCD, Dublin University, Queen’s University and for the first time by sides from NUI Maynooth and IT Carlow.
Between them, the student outfits produced an afternoon of very enjoyable, open and attack-minded rugby for those fortunate enough to be present.
Following six group games of a very high standard, where newcomers IT Carlow and particularly NUI Maynooth competed well, UCD overcame Queen’s in the first semi-final.
Trinity saw off a very game UCC in the second semi-final where Jack Fitzgerald of Trinity, who bagged six tries during the course of the tournament, was particularly prominent.
In the final UCD, guided by second row Hugo Mays and centre Chris Best, overcame a Mick McCarthy-led Dublin University for a hard-fought 13-7 win.
Queen’s got the better of hosts UCC in a high-scoring 3rd-4th place play-off tie which ended 24-17 in favour of the Belfast team.
Gerry Kelly, President of the Irish Universities Rugby Union, presented the Conroy Cup to the winning UCD captain Liam Burke. He thanked Gary Byrne and his team in UCC for all their efforts in successfully hosting this season’s competition.
The Conroy Cup commemorates the memory of the late Paddy Conroy, former Honorary Secretary and President of UCD RFC and a life-long supporter of University rugby in Ireland.
