Two Leinster and Ireland stars, Luke Fitzgerald and Malcolm O’Kelly, are amongst those who have graduated to the highest level of the game, having started out in Kilternan.

As did current Leinster scrum half John Cooney, who was a member of the Ireland Under-20 team that won the Six Nations title in 2010.

This Open Day is from 10am to 12.30pm and club officials hope that any parents who may be interested in letting their children play rugby will come along to Kirwan Park to meet the coaches, other parents and players.

‘Salmo has a reputation as a solid club with a strong Minis and Youth section. Starting as young as five years of age, the majority of its players progress through to the senior ranks.

With over 60 qualified coaches, children from the age of five learn the basics of the game in a controlled environment, with the emphasis on enjoyment and fun allowing them to reach their own standard.

Starting with playing games among themselves and as they get older against other teams, this helps build camaraderie and a sense of belonging.

At the younger ages, games are played for fun, keeping the players between the lines and running in the right direction is a result! At the older age groups, experienced coaches develop skills under the guidelines of the IRFU.

If you think your child would like to play rugby then come along to Kirwan Park next Sunday from 10am. Everyone is welcome.
