Glynn Cup At Stake In Galway

St. Patrick’s Day in Galway and there are rugby bragging rights at stake as Corinthians and Galwegians face off at all levels in the annual Glynn Cup.

The Glynn Cup is contested by teams from Corinthians and Galwegians at all levels. 32 sides – all ages and all levels – compete for the honour of their club and Galway rugby bragging rights.

The Glynn Cup commemorates the contribution to local and Irish rugby of Galway’s JJ Glynn who died tragically in 1959.

The trophy was first played for 52 years ago this St. Patrick’s Day as an annual match between the Corinthians and Galwegians’ senior teams, and the fixture became a regular highlight for 37 years up to 1999.

Under the Ryder Cup-style format introduced in 2009, each youth and adult team in the club can earn a point in the battle for the title, while mini rugby players take each other on for fun.

The Langan Trophy, commemorating the contribution to rugby of Gerry Langan, is also incorporated into the competition.

It takes into account the points scored by the youth teams from Under-13 to Under-19 level in each club. Galwegians have the edge, there having won the trophy on both occasions in recent years.

At the launch, club Presidents Derrick Murphy and Michael Berry thanked the organisers for their hard work over the past six months in preparing for the event. They also emphasised the important role events like this play in promoting club rugby in the west of Ireland.

Last year’s Glynn Cup saw almost 600 players take part with Corinthians taking the title back off holders Galwegians with a fine victory in the concluding senior game, winning by 6.5 points to 5.5 overall.

The 2011 running starts at 11am at Corinthian Park and there will be plenty of fun for all the family with rugby, music and food throughout the day.

There will also be a complimentary bus service from the Galway Tourist Office to Corinthians ground on the hour from 2pm. The senior match will kick off at 4pm.
