Cork Con’s Minis Festival A Great Success

Cork Con’s Minis Festival A Great Success

It was a busy day at Temple Hill, the home of Cork Constitution FC, on Saturday, January 8. There was the small matter of the club’s Ulster Bank League clash with St. Mary’s College, but just as important was the post-match Mini Rugby blitz with young players from Cork Con, St. Mary’s, UL Bohemians and Corinthians taking part.

Cork Constitution have been proactive in making their home league matches a big day in the club this season and the first game of 2011 was no exception.

Constitution’s seniors toughed out a win over St. Mary’s College to remain in secnd place in Ulster Bank League Division 1A, but after the game there was another important event as mini rugby players from Constitution, St. Mary’s, UL Bohemians and Corinthians played out a floodlit festival.

There were two sections and each club played one match against each other. Over 120 boys played in the Mini Rugby Festival and  were supported by up to 150 parents, brothers, sisters and friends in the cold evening air in Cork.

The rugby was of an excellent standard with all of the teams representing their clubs with pride. It was great to see 11-year-olds playing with the enthusiasm and skill of the seniors who had lined out earlier in the afternoon.

There was some terrific tries scored by all teams with excellent skills on view. It was the first time the teams had played under floodlights – it was great fun for all involved playing in new conditions and all the players said that it was an experience to remember.

Winning was not the focus of the day, participation and collaboration between all clubs was the real winner and it was obvious return fixtures will happen as a consequence.

There was a post-match reception in the clubhouse where some food and drinks were provided by the parents committee of Cork Con, which was followed by some speeches and swopping of club memorabilia.

Cork Con President Der O’Riordan emphasised the club’s commitment to proactively engaging the wider rugby community and was delighted that there was rugby and entertainment in the club right throughout the day.
