Cork Constitution Plan Festive Fun

Cork Constitution are putting a holiday programme in place for all members, with two particular highlights – the Kids Party and the annual St. Stephen’s Day Crowley Cup fixture with UCC and we can confirm that Temple Hill has been passed fit.

The Kids Christmas party was postponed on Saturday, December 4 on account of the bad weather and this weekend – Saturday, December 18 – sees the club getting back to the plans that were put together earlier in the month.

A full programme has been organised for the Under-6s up to Under-13s this Saturday.

Tony O’Connor also outlined how the club is engaging with the community, explaining: “This year Cork Con have focused on community engagement and our Christmas appeal reinforces this message that Cork Constitution is a community club.

“We are asking members to partake in our St. Vincent de Paul Giving Tree appeal, requesting our players to bring a children’s gift or non-perishable food item and leave it under the tree in support of the St. Vincent de Paul Christmas endeavours.

“St. Vincent de Paul is currently working through their busiest time of the year and we are asking our members to contribute in a very small way to the great work the society carries out during the festive season.”

After December 18, the underage sides take a well deserved break until January 8 which coincides with the rescheduled Cork Con v St. Mary’s College Division 1A match.

The club are planning another action-packed day for the visit of St. Mary’s to Temple Hill, but for the interim the focus is on Christmas.

There are many different activities going on over the festive period in the newly-refurbished function room but the big one takes place on December 26.

Temple Hill has always been a hive of activity on St. Stephen’s Day and this year’s annual Cork Con v UCC Crowley Cup encounter should be no different.

This day is a tradition in Cork for many past and present members of both Cork Constitution and UCC coming together to meet up on a day which is always great fun in the club.

Both teams play for the Crowley Cup in memorial of Derry Crowley, a past stalwart of both clubs and brother of Jackie, another great Cork Con past President.

His son John has represented both clubs with distinction and as has been the case for the past number of years, he will present the cup to the winning captain.

It is not only about the proud tradition and the affiliation that exists between both clubs that bring so many people to Temple Hill on St. Stephen’s Day but it is also an opportunity to watch great rugby in a relaxing environment.

Tony says that the appeal of the game is widspead, adding: “Past members of both Cork Con and College always report it’s a way of catching up over the Christmas and now with so many graduates abroad or in Dublin, it’s an ideal opportunity to meet during the holiday period.

“It has always been a great day for Cork Con’s Munster and Irish players to take time out during the busy schedule.

“This year Munster play Connacht at 5pm on the same day, so not all our Munster and Irish representatives will have the day off but those that are can watch their team-mates in either bar as the club is planning to install an extra TV in the function room.

“It’s an ideal opportunity to watch both matches in a fun atmosphere as those attending the 3pm kick-off at Temple Hill can then tune in to the Sportsground in Galway at 5pm.”

The club are providing hot bites in both bars after the Crowley Cup match and are inviting all past and present members and friends of both clubs to come and enjoy the day.

It promises to be another great day and what better way to catch up, chill out and make the most of Christmas rugby while meeting old friends.
