Irish Rugby Time Capsule For Aviva Stadium
To celebrate the return home of Irish rugby to the Aviva Stadium and mark the moment in history, the IRFU are calling on Irish rugby supporters to take part in an initiative that will see an Irish Rugby Time Capsule buried at the stadium in November which will not be opened until 2060.
The time capsule will be a representation of Irish rugby today and will include a variety of elements, with the first item being one of Brian O’Driscoll’s jerseys from the opening game of the GUINNESS Series against South Africa on Saturday, November 6.
Irish rugby supporters will then get the chance to add their own piece of Irish rugby history to the capsule and are being asked to submit something that they feel represents Irish rugby.
Clubs and schools from all over the country are being asked to send photographs of their teams and clubs that will be included in a photo album to be sealed in the capsule, along with a compilation of video footage of rugby from all levels.
In addition, primary school students from all over the country are being invited to submit an A4 size painting on the theme of Irish rugby with one being chosen by the Irish players to be included in the time capsule.
Each week during the GUINNESS Series, a new element will be added to the time capsule and before the final Test against Argentina on Sunday, November 28, the capsule will be sealed and buried at the Aviva Stadium where it will remain for 50 years.
Commenting on the initiative, Ireland’s Brian O’Driscoll said: “I think this is a fantastic way to mark our return to playing international rugby at the oldest international rugby ground in the world.
“I hope people contribute in whatever way they can as it’s a piece of history in the making.
“It’s a personal honour for me to have one of my jerseys included in the Irish Rugby Time Capsule and I only hope I’m still around when it’s opened up in 2060!
“Everyone involved in Irish rugby is looking forward to the Test matches in November from the players to the supporters, and it promises to be a very special occasion when rugby comes home.”
