Quinlan Supports Focus Ireland
Munster and Ireland back rower Alan Quinlan is calling on Tag rugby players and teams all over the country to give the Focus Ireland’s Fundraising Triathlon a ‘try’ when summer Tag ends and ‘convert’ their fitness efforts from the games into making a difference.
Munster legend Alan Quinlan kicked off the popular Fundraising Triathlon which takes place this August Bank Holiday weekend in Dún Laoghaire harbour.
It aims to raise over €;100,000 in vital funds for the charity’s work to combat and prevent homelessness. The event is more important than ever this year to help the charity cope with cuts in funding and a drop in donations due to the impact of the recession.
Focus Ireland’s Fundraising Triathlon consists of a 750m or 350m swim, 5km run and 20km cycle. Individual Tag rugby players or teams of 2-3 can register on www.focusireland.ie.
While individuals take on all three disciplines, teams can decide amongst themselves whether they want to do the swimming leg, running or cycling.
Alan said: “Given recent times we probably all know someone who has lost their job or had their income cut. Many people in this situation can struggle to keep a roof over their heads.
“The reason I am backing this campaign is because of the great work Focus Ireland does to support people who find themselves in serious difficulties – not only in my own area but in other cities nationwide.”
To take part in the event, individuals can register for €;50 and then raise €;200 or team-mates of 2-3 can register for €;150 and raise €;400 through sponsorship from team-mates, friends and family and events such as charity matches and fundraisers after tag games.
Focus Ireland Director of Fundraising Mark Mellett said: “Focus Ireland works to support people who are at risk of becoming homeless to prevent them from losing their home.
“We also work directly with people who are homeless to help them get back on their feet and in to a home – with support if required – so they don’t run the risk of becoming homeless again in the future.”
The money raised by the Focus Ireland Fundraising Triathlon will go towards the charity’s work supporting over 5,500 people through its services each year.
It will also help to fund the housing and homeless charity’s work providing a place to call home for over 650 households in Dublin, Limerick, Waterford, Cork, Kilkenny and Sligo.
