Corinthians Win Glynn Cup

Corinthians Win Glynn Cup

The Glynn Cup was won by Corinthians at Glenina on St. Patrick’s Day as they scored a 6.5 to 5.5 matchplay points victory over Galwegians. Corinthians’ senior side won 20-9 in the final game of an eventful day.

Both clubs are to be commended for another fantastic Glynn Cup event, which drew a crowd close to 3,000 to Crowley Park on a busy St. Patrick’s Day.

The Glynn Cup, fought out between Corinthians and Galwegians, was reintroduced last year with a competition format, as players from underage up to senior level at both clubs took each other on for points.

It is now firmly established as a blue riband event in Galway and Connacht rugby after a hugely successful second staging of the competition under its new format.

Huge numbers of parents, friends and supporters turned out to watch almost 600 players take part in proceedings during the day-long event and by its conclusion, Corinthians had secured the title back off holders Galwegians with a fine victory in the concluding senior game.

The 6.5 to 5.5 points victory in the overall standings was built on a foundation of strong results in the adult grades for the Cloonacauneen club who won the 3rds, 2nds and 1st matches during the afternoon and added victories in the Ladies tag and Under-21s for good measure.

The Sky Blues may have lost out overall but their underage squads did not disappoint contributing all five and a half points to their Glynn Cup tally and securing the Langan Trophy, which includes only the results from the underage encounters, for the second year in succession.

Admission for the bumper crowd was free on the day. Many thanks to those who gave generously to the collectors for the IRFU Charitable Trust who were present throughout the afternoon.
