Taking full advantage of St. Mary’s slip-up at home to Garryowen, Cork Con picked up their fifth straight league win with right winger Richie Lane doing most of the damage.

Lane struck for two tries, split either side of half-time, as Brian Walsh’s men recovered from a 12-3 deficit.

In ideal playing conditions, Blackrock number 8 Mick Carroll grabbed a ninth minute try, which fit-again out-half Ian Madigan converted.

Cork Con full-back Scott Deasy knocked over a 45-metre penalty in response, but ‘Rock extended their advantage on 23 minutes with a try in the corner from right winger Shane Monahan.

Lane’s first effort, converted by Deasy, reduced the arrears for the hosts to 12-10 at half-time and five minutes after the break, Lane was over again.

The game became tighter as it wore on with the forward battle increasing in its intensity. Deasy and Madigan swapped further penalties and the latter missed a gilt-edged chance to salvage a draw for his side at the death.

Deep into injury-time, the former Ireland Under-20 international lined up a penalty from a narrow angle on the 22-metre line, but his luck was out and Cork Con held on to make a winning start to 2010.
