A Tag Day Out in Sunny Rosslare

A Tag Day Out in Sunny Rosslare

Rosslare Strand made its Beach Tag debut on a fine day in the Sunny South East on Saturday as teams and spectators took to the fine Wexford sands for the third Bud Light Beach Tag Festival of 2009

As the Beach Tag games got underway amidst the music, sound of the starter hooter and referee whistles, beachgoers at Rosslare Strand took to the Stands (well, dunes actually) to watch teams compete in the first ever Bud Light Beach Tag event in this wonderful sunny part of the South East coast.

With as many spectators as players, the atmosphere was truly electric throughout the day as two groups of teams contested for not only the two Crystal Bud Light Tag Cups but for the prize of Rosslare Tug O’War champions.

In Group One, the Oddballs became stronger and stronger with each round to become eventual Cup winners at the death of extra-time with a golden point while in the other league, Wexford Wanderers’ very own Half-Mongrels toppled all who faced them to collect the Group Two Cup. The fine sand played its part in levelling each league’s teams to similar ability. It was quite a sight to see any open linebreakers with a whole pitch in front of them holding up and waiting for support. Energy conservation or just good honest teamwork…we’ll let you the specatators be the judge of that.

Crowds grew even larger as Ireland’s Grand Slam silverware made an appearance for many a photo opportunity for all and sundry. How well all the posers with the trophies looked in the bright sun of Wexford against the background of its white, fine beach.

Following the day’s final game, the Shellakybookies took on the Misfits for the Tug O’War crown but the Misfits proved too strong. Maybe it was that tough semi-final against their fellow Waterpark team Brasscocks which tired them out? Who knows. What we do know however is that they had enough to prevent being tugged out to sea so well done to all!

To top off this great day, the presentation of the trophies took place at Brady’s Pub on the Strand to great and deserved applause as the second half of the day for everyone got underway.

We’d like to thank all who contributed to Rosslare Strand’s first of many annual Beach Tag events as well as the many fun-loving players. In particular, all of our great referees, Jim and Ian at Brady’s, all the staff at Kelly’s Resort Hotel and Wexford’s ‘Mr Rugby’, Noel Ferguson who tirelessly does so much for the sport in this part of the country.

All had a massive part to play in the success of this day. Galleries of photos from the day out at Rosslare Strand will soon be available to view HERE.

Next weekend sees Bud Light Beach Tag take to the strand at world famous Inchydoney Beach in Clonakilty, Co.Cork. Registrations can be performed only online HERE. Don’t waste any time in booking your team slot or you may miss out and Bud Light Beach Tag is definitely not something to be missed.
