Bective Players Cycle for the Stuart Mangan Appeal

Bective Players Cycle for the Stuart Mangan Appeal

Players from Bective Rangers RFC are hitting the road West to East on Saturday 20th December to raise funds for the Stuart Mangan Appeal

On Saturday April 5th 2008, a simple tackle in a club Rugby game in London left Stuart Mangan, a graduate of Rockwell College and UCC aged just 24, with a devastating spinal injury.  Stuart is a first cousin of Eamonn Sayers, who plays in the Junior section of our club, Bective Rangers.

In global terms, Stuart’s injury is the most catastrophic rugby injury seen in recent years.  Categorized as C1 Complete, he is completely paralysed from the neck down and unable to breathe without a ventilator.  Stuart will require 24-hour medical care for the rest of his life.  Tragically, medical experts have described his spinal injury as the worst to occur in  sport.

At times like this the Rugby fraternity has to come together and make a special effort and Bective Rangers especially, as we have a connection to Stuart.  He is going to require £8 – 10 million for the rest of his life.

Stuart’s friends, family and clubmates have decided to organise a “Coast to Coast” fundraising cycle which will be completed by Senior players from the Bective Rangers First Team.  This cycle will cover 225km from Salthill Beach (Galway) to Sandymount Beach (Dublin).

Itinerary is as follows:

Depart – Salthill Sat 20th Dec @ 6.30am

Arrive – Athlone Sat PM (stay the night)
