Coaches, delegates and players from the Ireland touring squad joined their New Zealand counterparts at Government buildings in Wellington for a function on Tuesday evening, which was attended by New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark.

Speaking at the function, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark said: “It is 16 years since Ireland and the All Blacks last met in a Test match in Wellington.

In fact this Saturday’s game will be only the third time the teams have clashed in Wellington – yet matches between us stretch back for 103 years. Over that century of ties, our two rugby playing nations have forged close ties.

“We both draw our rugby teams from relatively small populations, yet we are high achievers against teams drawn from much bigger nations.

“Our rugby relationship is underlined by the many other family and cultural bonds between Ireland and New Zealand. Around 18 per cent of New Zealanders claim Irish descent, although that figure does seem to swell every St. Patrick’s Day!”
