Weekend Heats Up With Heineken Kinsale Sevens

Weekend Heats Up With Heineken Kinsale Sevens

They have been praying to the weather gods for months now but it looks like the organisers of the 2007 Heineken Kinsale Sevens might just get their wish for a sun-splashed Bank Holiday weekend.

A total of 96 teams are making their way to Kinsale this weekend for the annual Kinsale Sevens, which has become the premier Sevens rugby event in the Northern Hemisphere with a prize fund of €22,000 on offer.

Teams from Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Norway, Holland and various other countries have registered to participate in Junior, Senior, Veterans and Ladies competitions on five pitches at Cork club’s scenic grounds.

The event, which runs from today until Sunday, seems to increase in importance for the local community and rugby scene each year, with a turnover in the region of €6 million generated for Kinsale and Cork.

Teams arriving today came come up to the Kinsale pitches from 4pm onwards, with some ad-hoc matches against other teams – 10-a-side to warm-up. The bar will be open and food available afterwards.

Full details about the teams, match schedule and the weekend’s activities are available on the tournament’s website, www.kinsalesevens.com.

For anyone wishing to attend and support this excellent event, day tickets are priced at €15, while weekend passes cost €25. Under-12s are allowed in for free. The action starts at 10am sharp on both Saturday and Sunday.
