A couple of weeks ago we brought you news of the Renegades and their trip to defend their Beach Rugby title in Italy.

Unfortunately the Renegades lost out to a sudden death try in the final. Here is their report:

“Last weekend the Bective Renegades traveled to the Italian Riviera to defend their International Beach Rugby title in Lignano, near Venice.

“Despite searing heat of over 37 degrees celsius on the tournament’s opening day, Bective still topped their group with victories over teams from Cologne, Prague, and Zagreb.

“A narrow defeat to English side Brighton Panthers did not alter Bective’s top ranking after the pool games thus gaining them an automatic semi-final place.

“With the Brighton Panthers defeating London NZ RFC in a qualifier we faced the Panthers once more in the semi-final. Revenge and a place in the final gave us every incentive, thus a blistering display produced a convincing victory (nine tries to four) over the English. The match was viewed by most as perhaps the best game of the tournament.

“With three tries apiece in a very tense and physical final, the title was to be decided by a sudden death try. The killer blow came from the reigning Italian League champions Maccarese Roma in front of over 2,500 spectators. The 38 degree heat and the previous games gradually took its grip on the weary legs. We badly missed Paul Hatton who got injured before we set off.

“This weekend, Bective Renegades move on to a debut entry in the Stockholm Tens (July 29/30). With Bective Rangers’ 125th Anniversary Season tour to Argentina and Chile next month, the lads are even more determined to win the cup for the club.”
