Pack leader Paul O’Connell has run out as the clear winner in our latest poll to find out who you rated as Ireland’s player of the 2006 RBS 6 Nations Championship.
The Munster lock, who missed only the Welsh game after straining the A/C joint in his shoulder against France last month, grabbed over half of your votes in the poll. Certainly, his towering displays in the victories over Scotland and England swung it for him.
Ireland captain Brian O’Driscoll may have won the rbs6nations.com vote for overall 6 Nations Player of the Championship, hooker Jerry Flannery may have scooped the Sure For Men Irish Player gong, voted for by members of the media, but O’Connell was certainly the fans’ favourite.
The 26-year-old Limerick man flew past the finishing post with 52% – that’s 2315 votes. Second came Flannery on 20% (917 votes), Triple Crown try-scoring hero Shane Horgan was third on 15% (687 votes), and last but not least was talismanic skipper O’Driscoll with 6% (283 votes). The “Other” option gained a 5% share (222).
Don’t forget if you are a member of the Irish Rugby Supporters Club, you still have time to vote for the official Supporters Club Player of the Season. The players in the running are: Shane Horgan, Brian O’Driscoll, Paul O’Connell, Jerry Flannery and Andrew Trimble.
The lucky winner of the competition run in conjunction with the Player of the Season vote will get to present the chosen player with his award at a training camp day before the Ireland squad head off to New Zealand and Australia for the summer tour in June.
