Tries from Andrew Maxwell, his fourth in two games, and the recalled Tyrone Howe, allied to a brilliant kicking display by former All Black Paul Steinmetz – he landed six penalties and a conversion – helped Ulster to a 30-13 success. The win mains the men in white’s positioning of fourth in the table.

Ireland Sevens international Maxwell said afterwards: “Llanelli are a fine side and it was always going to be difficult and we went out with the intention of playing a really controlled game.

“This time we took our chances and that made all the difference. The try just before half-time was significant. It meant that without having played that well we were still only three points in arrears. From the moment Isaac (Boss) picked up the ball I knew he was going to break so I stayed to his inside and that was it.”

Scarlets full-back Barry Davies, who kicked two penalties on the night, offloads under pressure from Ulster number 8 Roger Wilson.

Ulster full-back Bryn Cunningham is caught in possession by Scarlets winger Garan Evans.

Ulster scrum half Isaac Boss is tackled by Scarlets prop Martyn Madden and flanker Gavin Thomas. The burly Madden was sin-binned after 27 minutes of play, leaving Llanelli down to 13 men. But the big talking point of the night revolved around the 66th-minute red card that Scarlets flanker Dafydd Jones received. There was a suggestion afterwards that Scottish referee Peter Allan had got the wrong man for the stamping offence, which was committed on Ireland lock Matt McCullough.

Scarlets coach Gareth Jenkins fumed: “We were competitive in the first half, but in the second half the referee awarded 10 penalties against us because of the interpretation he brought to the game.

“In all, we had two players yellow carded and one red carded. We’ve looked at the sending-off and overall we felt we were denied an opportunity to play in the second half.”

Scarlets scrum half Clive Stuart-Smith is tackled by Ulster fly half Adam Larkin, who was filling in at number 10 for the Ireland-tied David Humphreys.
