AIB League: Division Two Round-Up

With Bective’s trip to Malone called off on Saturday due to the funeral of George Best, Terenure College now sit top of the pile in Division Two after their fourth win of the campaign.

Kevin West’s Terenure side ran riot at home to Old Crescent, running in five tries in a 41-8 victory at Lakelands.

Number 8 Alex Dunlop, centre Shane Cullen, hooker James Blaney, right winger Brian Flanagan and flanker Peter O’Malley all touched down for the Dubliners. Leinster fly-half Dave McAllister converted all five tries, adding two penalties for good measure, to send the Limerick side packing.

Across at Parsonstown, Barnhall moved up to sixth thanks to their 9-0 defeat of mid-table Midleton. Fly-half Eoin Hogan kicked three penalties for Barnhall.

At Woodleigh Park, an impressive performance from Young Munster saw them bypass former leaders Bective and move up to 20 points, putting them level with Terenure. Munsters outscored their hosts Highfield by four tries to one in a 28-13 success.

Munster scrum-half Mike Prendergast took the man-of-the-match honours for the visitors as tries from fly-half Mick Lynch, left winger Michael South and right winger Steven Carey (2) saw them home as easy winners. League veteran Lynch converted all four tries with his right boot.

Last season’s Division Three champions Greystones had inspirational fly-half Warren Edwards to thank for almost single-handedly – on the scoreboard at least – seeing off the challenge of Old Belvedere at Anglesea Road.

The Kiwi scored a try, three penalties and a drop goal in ‘Stones’ 17-10 victory, which moved the Wicklow side up to eighth in the standings.

Elsewhere, full-back John Cusack, who scored a try, a conversion and two penalties, proved instrumental in Thomond’s 18-13 beating of Waterpark at Liam Fitzgerald Park.

UCC rose up to third in the table following their somewhat surprising five-try 35-17 win at Ballynahinch.

Credibly, having been 21-3 down, Willie Anderson’s ‘Hinch side brought it back to 21-17 – with the result hanging in the balance thanks to tries from former Ireland Schools flanker Willie Faloon and scrum-half Paul Marshall.

But the Cork students had other ideas, and they chalked up their first bonus point of the season as full-back Des Hurley and centre Dave O’Leary added final quarter tries to the first half ones scored by prop Tim Ryan, centre Don O’Flynn, and srum-half Duncan Williams.
