The match, originally scheduled for this coming Saturday (kick-off 2.30pm, Gibson Park), will take place on a future date with the IRFU’s Games Committee yet to confirm the fixture details.

Malone’s Gibson Park ground is on the Cregagh Road, just a short distance away from Best’s family home in east Belfast. The funeral for the former Manchester United and Northern Ireland football legend, who died last Friday, will see a cortege travel three miles from the Best family home to Stormont on Saturday.

Malone club President Roy Sherman told BBC Sport: “Bective agreed to our request that the game should be called-off.

“We had planned a big day at Gibson Park, but because of the circumstances we felt it was the right decision.

“Naturally we all knew George Best. He lived only a few hundred yards from our ground, and it was only right that we should show some respect on his death.”

Meanwhile, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) have set up a Book of Condolences for members of the public who wish to pass on their messages of sympathy on the passing of George Best, at their Headquarters in Merrion Square.

The Book is available for signatures from Monday to Friday, all this week, from 9am until 5pm. The FAI head office is at 80 Merrion Square, Dublin 2.
