Ahead of the new season, we quiz Connacht CEO Gerry Kelly on his favourites moments at the Sportsground and his tips for players to watch in 2005/06.

Favourite on-field moment?: The 23-18 home victory over NEC Harlequins in last year’s European Challenge Cup semi-final second leg.

Favourite off-field moment?: The march of the supporters to the Sportsground that same April day when we beat ‘Quins, by the Galway Arts group Machnas.

What’s so special about the Sportsground?: Where else in Ireland can you have a four course medal and watch a rugby game. And, of course, that special wind effect!

Which of Connacht’s new signings do you think will have the greatest
impact this season?:
Colm Rigney’s return from Leeds will have a major influence.

With Eric Elwood now coaching, who’s likely to assume the mantle of the
on-field general?:
Our lock and captain Andrew Farley has already assumed the leadership role.

Of the underage talent at the province, who would you tip for a big year
and why?:
Danny Riordan, formerly of Colaiste Iognaid and Corinthians, has already played for Ireland an Under-21 level (as a winger). He has the football skills to make a big impact.

Of the Connacht squad, who would you like to put forward for a cap during
Ireland’s autumn Test series?:
Conor McPhillips deserves to make that step up. But watch out for a few surprises.

Predicted Celtic League finish?: Our ambition is to finish first in the Celtic League. I assume all eleven teams have the same target!
