St Mary’s celebrating last season’s Leinster Senior Cup win

St Mary’s College made history at the High King Tens at Navan RFC on Saturday by becoming the first club to retain the ten-a-side tournament’s senior title.

The Dubliners, winners over the Bradford Bulls in last year’s final, earned a 17-0 win over fellow AIB League Division One side Clontarf in the 2005 decider.

Elsewhere at Navan’s Balreask Old grounds, Bective Rangers secured the senior Plate thanks to a 31-14 win over Longhorns, a mix of players from De La Salle Palmerston and Portadown. In the junior men’s competition, home club Navan won the title for the first time, edging Garda 15-10 in the final. Navan’s David Delahunt also claimed the junior player of the tournament award.

The junior Plate went to the Exiles, a composite team of former Navan players, as they pipped Coolmine 17-14, while the Foxy Ladies, named the Rathdrum Vixens in 2004, and made up of a selection of Irish internationals, scooped the ladies crown yesterday, beating Enniskillen, who boasted player of the tournament Brenda Brogan, 27-0.

The Pink Ladies, repesenting Navan, were named as Plate winners, after a 22-0 final victory over the Boyne Babes.

Hing King Tens PRO Gerry Williamson admitted, following a number of late withdrawals, that the organising committee may push next year’s tournament towards the end of August.

“We had a few teams pull out on Friday which meant we had to reschedule things. It can be difficult with some clubs only getting back into training last week. We’re looking at having more of an international representation next year, with teams from the UK and Europe, so the last weekend in August might be the best option,” he said.
