The annual ten-a-side event, pioneered in 2001 by ex-Navan player/coach John Mulvihill, who is now coaching co-ordinator at Perth Super 14 side Western Force, will take place at Navan RFC over Saturday and Sunday.

32 teams are down to participate in the senior men’s, junior men’s and women’s competitions, with both St Mary’s and Naas, 2004’s senior and junior champions, back to defend their title.

AIB League outfits Clontarf, Dungannon, Bective Rangers, Skerries and Wanderers will also be in action at Balreask Old.

Mary’s are aiming to become the first side to retain the senior trophy. Saints’ captain David Clare said: “The High King Tens kick started what was a successful season for us, with promotion back to Division One. We’re looking forward to defending the title in Navan.”

The weekend will have a full programme of entertainment, commencing this Friday with a High King Tens’ dinner in the Navan RFC clubhouse. Guest speaker at the dinner will be RTE rugby pundit and Newstalk 106 host George Hook, as well as a surprise guest. Navan native Peter Coyle, who has kindly consented to being Patron of the event, will also be in attendance.
