Ulster suffered a heavy defeat to a rampant Gloucester side that needed a win to keep their European dream alive. Ulster were out scored six tries to one, with Henry Paul being the main thorn in Ulster’s Side, contributing 25 points.
The basis for the win was Gloucester’s superiority in the forwards and although the Ulster eight battled all afternoon, in the end they could not withstand the onslaught.
Gloucester raced into a 9 – 0 lead thanks to three penalties from Paul, but this was erased by David Humphreys who kicked a penalty and scored a fine try after good work from Neil Doak and Kevin Maggs, with the conversion giving Ulster the lead after 28 Minutes. The lead was not to last, as Henry Paul kicked another penalty and things got worse for Ulster as the unfortunate Humphreys had a pass intercepted and returned 65 metres by Duncan McRae for the score.
Humphreys cut the deficit with another penalty, but again Gloucester came back with a try through full back Jon Goodridge, which was converted by Paul again. After the break, Ulster prop Rod Moore was sin binned and Paul continued to pile on the misery with a drop goal, which was followed by a try from South African prop Bezuidenhout to make the score 29 – 13.
Before Moore could return, Humphreys completed his miserable day to have another pass intercepted by Gloucester to give James Simpson-Daniels the easy run in. The final whistle could not come quick enough, but Gloucester again played party pooper and scored two late tries through Garvey and Adam Balding to bring up the 50 point mark.
The day got even worse for Ulster when Paddy Wallace, who had come on for Humphreys, damaged an ankle and will be out for up to four weeks.
