No Joy For Connacht In Wales

Newport Gwent Dragons 28-19 Connacht.

Newport Gwent Dragons jumped into second place in the Celtic League table thanks to a 28-19 win over Connacht (Sun), a victory that preserves the Mike Ruddock coached side’s unbeaten home record. It also meant that The Dragons moved ahead of Connacht in the League table having started the game a place behind them.

The Dragons were in charge for long periods, scoring three tries through hooker Steve Jones, winger Ben Breeze and centre Hal Luscombe. Outside-half Lee Jarvis slotted 13 points from three penalties and two conversions.

A bonus for the Dragons was the second-half appearance of stalwart Canadian prop Rod Snow Scottish back-row forward Ross Beattie, and Wales lock Michael Owen who was making his debut for the side.

The home side took control early in the game and although Connacht came back to get within six points, they were denied a boinus point when Jarvis landed a late peanlty.

Connacht captain, hooker Bernard Jackman crossed for a try, and Mark McHugh kicked four penalties and a conversion.

So, despite the off-field difficulties being experienced by the Welsh side, Ruddock has managed to keep the side’s focussed on the field and they now stand second in the table as they next contemplate Heineken Cup opponents in a forthnight’s time.
