Ulster drew the shortest straw when the 2003/04 Heineken Cup pools were announced with the northern province bracketed with Stade Francais or Toulouse in a pool that also includes Leicester Tigers and the Welsh regional side which is likely to be called Gwent. Whether it will be Stade Francais or Toulouse will not be known until after the French Championship final but the winner of that game will be the French representative in Pool A along with a Leicester side who booked their place by virtue of their extra time win over Saracens last weeK-end. The Welsh side will be made up the combination of Ebbw Vale and Newport and although there are wranglings right now within that newly formed club, if they get themselves sorted they will be a a difficult proposition with the astute Mike Ruddock to coach them.

In Pool C, Leinster will meet Biarritz, the side they beat in the quarter final as well as Sale Sharks and Cardiff while Munster are in Pool E, drawn for the second successive year alongside Gloucester with the Italians Benneton Treviso and French side Bourgoin.
