David Wallace won his tenth cap for Ireland in their record breaking 54-10 win over Wales in Lansdowne Road. Wallace had an outstanding game setting up the first try brilliantly, and afterwards when we caught up with him in the team dressing room under the West Stand, he expressed his delight with the team’s performance.

” I was thoroughly delighted with the result and the performance. There was a bit of pressure on us after the good season last year and that was always going to be hard to top. As well as that it was the first game, there’s a new management so everyone felt under a bit of pressure. So really, in here (dressing room) there’s a sense of relief and delight with a good result and a good team performance.”

In relation to the game itself Wallace was happy that ” we were able to run the the defensive patterns we wanted to run and go through the patterns we had planned. It’s always always satisfying when the things you do in training work out in a match situation, it’s good to have all those things concreted. OK they won’t be too happy with the result. They got bogged down in their own half in the first half and then in the second half the wind seemed to die on them a little bit so they didn’t have that advantage. But we can’t dwell on that. It was good that we kept up the momentum, kept going until the end.”

He had a few words of praise for his Munster Paul O’Connell. ” Paul had a great debut, a super game even if he was only on for what, about thirty odd minutes. But he really did well in that time. He got a bit of an elbow and was dazed, I don’t think he was targetted, it was just one of those things. He played on for a while but in the end he just couldn’t continue.”

Wallace was seen to good effect in the midfield and it’s a role he likes. “In training we practice backs and forwards defending the pitch in a line and there isn’t really any number on your back when you’re in defence like that. If a prop is out there he is going to have to do the same job as a winger. It’s a thing I like really, getting out there and just making sure we win that ball.”

Wallace ended the game hobbling but confirmed that the injury is not serious. ” I went over on it with about 20 minutes to go but was able to play on. It’s not too bad, a bit sore and swollen right now and just needs a bit of ice.”

And looking forward to the English game? ” It’ll be tougher of course. I watched them against Scotland and they are the force in the Six Nations, the side everyone wants to beat because they’re the side everyone grades themselves against. So it’s always a big match and one we’re always up for.”

And on Tuesday there’s the draw for the Heineken Cup and David’s preference? ” A home draw and we’ll take our chances from there. A home match really, we’ve done our share of travelling so it’d be nice to have home advantage. After that whoever you get, you just have to focus your attention on playing rugby and winning the match, whoever you’re up against, that what we’re out there to do.”
