Wales played with a strong wind in the opening half and went in front after six minutes when Lee Jarvis kicked a penalty from 22 metres. He extended the lead after fourteen minutes with a second penalty, this one from just inside the Irish ten metre line. Wales were reduced to fourteen when Alix Popham was yellow carded and while he was on the line Ireland struck for a well worked try. It started when Paddy Wallace showed good hands to put Tyrone Howe clear into the Welsh 22 and when the ball was worked right Neil Doak was on hand to score under the posts.
Jarvis however landed a drop-goal almost immediately and then two penalties to establish a 15-7 lead and with Paul Burke now in the sin-bin, Irish coach brought on Anthony Horgan as a tactical replacement for Victor Costello, with Wallace moving to out-half.
In injury time Mike Mullins fashioned a superb break in mid-field fed Jeremy Davidson who in turn sent Alan Quinlan over under the posts. Wallace added the points and Ireland trailed by a single point (15-14) at half-time.
With the wind at their backs in the second half the home side set about their task from the kick off. Davidson started it off with a try which converted and then Gordon D'Arcy struck wide on the right to leave Ireland 26-15 in front.
And the tries continued to rain down on the Welsh line. John Kelly and Tyrone Howe scored one apiece before Welsh full back Adrian Durston interrupted the flow with try under the posts (38-22). Paul Burke tagged on a penalty and converted Pady Wallace's try. Then in injury time Howe scored his second and Ireland's eight try, Burke converting to complete the rout.
