UL Bohs Pick Up Third League Win

UL Bohs Pick Up Third League Win

There was no home comfort for Bruff as this Ulster Bank League Friday Night Lights clash was won by visitors UL Bohemians in quite comfortable fashion.

Bruff believed they had made the perfect start at Kilballyowen Park when centre Brian Cahill put over a fifth minute penalty following a scrum infringement.

But Peter Malone's side had scarcely drawn their breath when young UL out-half JJ Hanrahan was on target just a minute later.

The Ireland Under-20 international kicked his second penalty in the 12th minute as Bohs began to force the issue.

Approaching the interval, the Bruff defence was all over the place as UL created a series of promising moves.

A superb tackle by Brian Cahill halted one such move but Bohs used quick ruck ball to create a three-man overlap and prop Dave Kilcoyne had the simplest of tasks in touching down for the game's only try.

Hanrahan, who was prominent in the lead up to the try along with Tommy O'Donnell, made no mistake with the conversion.

And when, once again, the Bruff forwards were penalised the Kerryman put over the penalty to make it 16-3 at half-time.

As in all local derbies, a lot of pride was at stake and matters got a little heated which forced referee Leo Colgan to yellow card a forward from each side.

Dave Horan, the Bruff prop, and Bohs’ Munster hooker Sean Henry were sent to the sin-bin during what was a lively opening period.

Cahill notched the opening score on the resumption before the place-kickers exchanged further penalties.

Cahill’s fourth successful kick reduced the arrears to 19-12 but Hanrahan had the final say when he dropped a goal to bring his personal haul to an impressive 20 points.

It was UL's third win in five league games under new head coach Colm Tucker jnr and has moved them up to fourth in the Division 1B table.
