Munster ‘A’ Take The Spoils In Neath
Aided by tries from wingers Ronan O’Mahony and Simon Zebo, Munster ‘A’ got the better of Neath in this British & Irish Cup clash at the Gnoll. Ian Costello’s men are now second in the Pool 2 table, ahead of next month’s final games against Ayr and Moseley.
This was a very professional performance from the Munstermen, whose terrific defence simply sucked the life out of the Neath attack.
The visitors took their scoring chances when they came, none more so than out-half JJ Hanrahan who kicked two first half penalties and did well to convert Ronan O'Mahony's try from a tough position.
Neath, who had beaten defending champions Bristol in the previous round, were still in contention at the break. They trailed 13-9 with their number 10 Dai Langdon converting three penalties.
But the Blacks lost their flanker and captain Gareth Gravell to a yellow card early in the second period, and Hanrahan landed the resulting penalty for a seven-point lead.
Munster 'A' tightened their grip on the game with a try from Simon Zebo in the 55th minute, the move coming from a quick tap and go from scrum half Duncan Williams.
Hanrahan converted and the result was effectively sewn up, the red defensive wall keeping Neath out apart for a couple of breaks from replacements David Evans and Thomas Barry.
Ian Costello's charges were particularly strong at lineout time, with David Foley and Ian Nagle excelling in the air and putting the Neath set piece under constant pressure.
