Leinster ‘A’ Finish On Top Against Llanelli

Leinster ‘A’ Finish On Top Against Llanelli

The Leinster ‘A’ team continued their fine start to the British & Irish Cup when they defeated Llanelli 19-13 in Sunday afternoon’s pool game at Parc y Scarlets.

The game was played in torrential conditions in Llanelli and the visitors did well to recover and regroup from a 7-0 deficit early on when Llanelli centre Jonny Lewis touched down, with Jordan Williams converting after 16 minutes.

A brace of Noel Reid penalties in the 18th and 27th minutes reduced the lead to a solitary point heading into the interval.

However, a minute after the restart, Leinster 'A' were on the back foot once more as Williams slotted home a penalty.

Either side of the break both sides had a player sin-binned for infringements – Leinster 'A' lost the services of scrum half John Cooney and Llanelli winger Iolo Evans followed him early in the second half.

Reid kicked his third successful penalty in the 46th minute before the impressive Leo Auva'a continued his fine recent run of form with a 51st minute try, once again from a quick tap and go. Reid added the extras.

The talented young out-half tagged another penalty on the hour mark to push Leinster 'A' into a nine-point lead and despite Williams clawing back three points, Colin McEntee's men held on to seal a deserved win on a fine day all round for the province.

Reid turned in an excellent place-kicking display, landing all five of his shots at the target, and the men in blue possessed a dominant scrum.

McEntee's young charges are back in action against London Welsh at Donnybrook next Sunday (kick-off 2.30pm). After their third victory on the trot, Leinster 'A' lead Pool 4 by four points from chief chasers Bedford Blues.
