Saili And Monahan In The Mix For Munster

The Munster squad trained in the summer sun at the University of Limerick today as preparations continue for this Friday’s pre-season encounter with Connacht at Thomond Park (kick-off 7.45pm).

Following their respective knocks in last Friday’s outing against Grenoble, Tyler Bleyendaal (tight groin), Robin Copeland (bang to shoulder) and Jordan Coghlan (shoulder stinger) sat out training today and will be assessed as the week continues.

When meeting with media today, Munster head coach oach Anthony Foley said he expects new signings Francis Saili and Shane Monahan to have some involvement this weekend along with James Cronin, Stephen Archer, Jack O’Donoghue, CJ Stander, Dave O’Callaghan, Duncan Williams, Ian Keatley and long term injury returnee Mike Sherry.

Meanwhile, Foley is waiting on a timeline for the return of Denis Hurley. The centre met with a specialist today having suffered a knock to the ankle in training last week and is expected to miss the first couple of games of the season, while Ronan O’Mahony‘s return-to-play will be reviewed after managing osteitis pubis last season.

Munster will wear their new 2015/16 adidas alternate kit (see right) for the first time on Friday night.

In previewing the game, Foley said: “I think both sides are really looking forward to this game and it’s important that we get value out of what we’ve done in pre-season. Connacht had a very good season last year and they’ll be looking to build on that so I’m looking forward to a very good game.

“Our guys have had an excellent pre-season and now the onus is on me to see as many of these guys over the three games and from those performances I’ll have my starting line-up and matchday 23 for Treviso. Hopefully these games will be as competitive as possible.”

Meanwhile, the Munster Sevens squad also trained in UL today with head coach Colm McMahon to name his squad for the Limerick World Club Sevens tournament on Tuesday afternoon. Ireland Sevens internationals Alex Wootton and Diarmaid McCarthy are expected to be included.

The interprovincial pre-season match will take place as part of the Limerick World Club Sevens event at Thomond Park. On Friday, two adults can enjoy Sevens and 15-a-side action for the price of one.
